Featured Plant: River Birch
The River Birch was named for its habitat along the streams and rivers of eastern North America. It is an excellent specimen tree for homes, parks, and open spaces. The cinnamon-colored, exfoliating bark of the River Birch is spectacular in the winter. Its love for moist soil makes it ideal for low-lying areas and eroding banks. This native beauty belongs with other wetland natives such as Willow, Sweetgum, and Sugar Maple. Be sure to follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Pruning should be done in the winter followed by application of a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.
